Combat Self-Sabotage

Many of us suffer from a secret fear of success. We want to succeed but we self-sabotage because deep down, we are really afraid of success. Take the basketball star who drinks himself into a stupor just before a big game. Or the college student who cheats on an exam knowing s/he would be disqualified if caught. We may practice self-sabotage because we haven’t confronted our fears of winning. Thus, to overcome self-sabotage, we must:

1. Write down fears around success.
2. Draw a picture of dreams in a way that would accommodate those fears. For example, if you can embrace making $100,000 a year but not a million, don’t picture a million.
3. Place a picture of success on the ceiling above your bed, on bathroom mirror, or refrigerator – somewhere you can see it easily and often.
4. Read or listen to motivational messages preferably from people who have excelled in the industry of your dream.
5. Eliminate distractions such as television and detractors who tell you that you’re wasting your time.
6. Find accountability partners or mentors to help you stay the course. These people will keep you working towards your dream until you achieve it.
7. Go for it! Trample over self-sabotage on your way to achieving your dreams.
